Tell your members of Congress to stand up for the American Dream and protect programs for low-income families in the deficit reduction debate!

With the August 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling rapidly approaching, President Barack Obama and Congress are working overtime to develop a plan to reduce the deficit. With only a few days of negotiations left, now is the time to make your voice heard. Urge your senators and representative to uphold one key principle as they finalize a deficit reduction plan: Protect programs for low-income families and individuals and ensure deficit reduction does not increase poverty.

Major bipartisan deficit reduction plans in recent decades have met this basic standard. In fact, all of the deficit reduction packages enacted in the 1990s not only brought down the deficit but also reduced poverty in America. Getting our fiscal house in order need not, and should not, mean we do so in a way that increases poverty, hardship, and inequality while financing additional tax breaks for the wealthy.

The American Dream is under siege today. With unemployment topping 9 percent, an ongoing foreclosure crisis, and the high cost of basic necessities, struggling Americans need services like Medicaid and food stamps to make ends meet more than ever. They need the opportunities provided by Pell Grants and job training to obtain economic security and provide a better future for their children.

Your members of Congress need to hear from you during this critical time—please call or email your senators and representative and ask them to stand up for the American Dream. Tell them to oppose harmful cuts to low-income programs and support fair increases in revenues to fight reckless cuts to important services. Urge them to reject a constitutional balanced budget amendment which would threaten our economic stability and likely force huge cuts to programs providing basic assistance to the most vulnerable Americans. Make your call today, toll free at 888.907.1485.

With critical services for our most vulnerable hanging in the balance, your voice on this issue could not be more needed or important during this time.
