White House: Defend the People of Congo

The M23 rebel group just stormed and seized Goma, a major city in eastern Congo. This is the largest takeover by rebels in eastern Congo since 2003.

The U.S. government can help end the crisis. Now, more than ever, it’s time to show leadership. We need to encourage the White House to promote peace in the region. Join the Enough Project's Raise Hope for Congo Campaign, Jewish World Watch, Free the Slaves, and Falling Whistles and speak out for the people of eastern Congo.

Send this letter Denis R. McDonough, the White House’s Deputy National Security Advisor and ask him to speak out against the M23's recent actions and for the people of eastern Congo.

Denis R. McDonough, White House,

Thank you for all of the work you've done in the White House on a wide-range of issues related to civilian protection and Africa.

As you know, the rebel movement known as M23 has captured Goma and taken control of a large swath of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu Province. Through violence, pillaging, intimidation, and fraud, the M23 rebellion has resulted in the displacement of half a million people since April.

It is critical for the international community to tackle cyclical violence in the DRC once and for all. I urge the White House to take the following immediate steps:

1. The U.S. government must push the United Nations mission in Congo to protect civilians against rape and pillage.

2. The U.S. government through the U.N. Security Council must expand targeted sanctions against all officials and parties that are blocking peace -- from M23, Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda.

3. The U.S. government should appoint a special envoy to work with an A.U./U.N. appointed mediator to begin a real peace process that addresses both the immediate crisis and the underlying longer-term economic and political interests of the parties.

Thank you for your urgent and immediate action in response to this crisis,
