Dear Senator: Protect Reproductive Rights for Young Women

The House passed their health care bill and with it the Stupak-Pitts amendment was passed and is now threatening to end up in the final health care reform bill. We must stop this restriction on women's rights from becoming law.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment bans most abortions from being covered in the new health insurance exchange. Plans that cover abortion services will not be able to offer coverage in the exchange unless its subscribers can afford to pay 100% of their premiums with no assistance from the government. But the majority of women purchasing plans in the health insurance exchange will need government subsidies to purchase insurance, and many of these women will be young women ages 18-29. Women must be able to purchase private or public health insurance that offers comprehensive reproductivehealth care, including abortion care.

This amendment significantly impacts the youth generation: Fifty percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25 and 12.4 million women of childbearing age (15-44) are uninsured.
