Get Out of the Way of Fair Pay
Tell the Chamber of Commerce what would you do with $223,776!
That is how much Goodyear underpaid Lilly Ledbetter over her career compared to the men doing her same job at the company! Not only is underpaying women unfair, it hurts their familes and it hurts the nation's economy. If women are paid the money the earn in the workplace, we would have fewer families in poverty, fewer families unable to pay their mortgages, and more families with money saved for retirement. In other words, denying women fair pay for the work hurts everyone.
It is time for groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to get out of the way of fair pay.
Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Down and Paycheck Fairness Act To GoThe Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is now the law of the land. Next up, the Senate needs to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. Help make pay equity a reality. Let's make sure the Senate votes FOR fairness to women and FOR helping American families. Tell your senators to vote YES on the Paycheck Fairness Act NOW. |

What would your family do with $434,000Improving pay equity would create substantial economic gains for women and their families. A new report found that women lose approximately $434,000, on average, over a 40-year period because of the gender wage gap.* Other studies show that moms, especially single moms, fare even worse with the gender wage gap.
But the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is standing in the way of fair pay by opposing pay equity reform proposals in Congress that are needed to achieve pay equity. Tell the U.S. Chamber of Commerce what your family would do with $434,000 and more importantly, tell the Chamber to get out of the way of fair pay. |

Tell Congress: Include UIMA in the Economic Recovery Package
Unemployment Insurance helps keep families from losing their homes and falling into poverty when workers lose their jobs, and economists tell us that it is among the most effective forms of stimulus. But:
The UIMA would eliminate barriers and allow more workers, especially low wage workers, women workers, part-time workers, and the long-term unemployed, collect benefits. It would help more than 500,000 additional unemployed workers and their families get the unemployment insurance they have spent their working lives contributing towards.

Senate: Pass the Recovery Package to Start Rebuilding America
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes many initiatives that help people in poverty, including home weatherization funds, UIMA, and child care. This essential legislation also includes a much needed expansion of the Child Tax Credit. Under current law, the Child Tax Credit gives up to $1,000 per child to households with kids—but it currently leaves out millions of children in the lowest income families. We need your help to increase support to these children.
The Background
The House package that passed last week, and the Senate bill under consideration, include many vital antipoverty measures. They dedicate resources to: home weatherization programs; child care and Head Start; unemployment modernization that will help 500,000 low-wage workers to get Unemployment Insurance for the first time, health care for unemployed workers; education, job training, and Pell grants; increased food stamp funding; aid for states to maintain education, health care, and community safety; billions of dollars in expanded refundable tax credits for low income households; and more.
One of the refundable tax credits in both packages is an expansion of the Child Tax Credit. Right now, the House package goes further by eliminating the earnings threshold, but if the Senate takes the simple step to follow their lead, 2.2 million more low-income children would qualify for a credit and 10 million more children would receive a larger credit. For example, a family with earnings of $5000 could qualify for a $750 credit, and a full-time minimum wage earner with two children would qualify for a $1000 credit for each child. The House approach provides an additional $3.9 billion dollars to very low income families. Read more about the Child Tax Credit.
We need your help!
Together, we call on the Senate to support the recovery package today, with the House position on the Child Tax Credit. If it does, children, families, and working Americans across the country will benefit from essential programs that are among the most effective forms of stimulus.
On Saturday, March 21, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly sent one of his producers to stalk, harass, and ambush ThinkProgress.org’s managing editor Amanda Terkel. Upset over a ThinkProgress report that noted O’Reilly’s insensitivity to rape, O’Reilly sent two men to track Amanda in a car for two hours, and then confronted her with hostile questions while she was on vacation.
Sadly, Amanda is just one of at least 40 different victims of O’Reilly’s Harassment Machine. O’Reilly has hired producers whose job is to track, harass, and intimidate anyone whom O’Reilly perceives as an opponent. That’s not “journalism” — that’s a mafia-style operation. And we need to put an end to it.
Tell O’Reilly’s advertisers that you want them to issue a clear statement explaining their opposition to O’Reilly’s “ambush journalism.” Fill out the form below to tell O’Reilly’s corporate advertisers to stop supporting the O’Reilly Harassment Machine.

President Obama has a plan to strengthen America by making college more affordable for millions of Americans.
The President proposes to save almost ten billion dollars a year by shutting down a program that gives banks wasteful subsidies on student loans. He wants to devote the savings – as much as $87 billion over 10 years -- to Pell Grants and other programs that help students pay for college. It would also expand programs to improve college access and completion, to make sure millions of additional young people can benefit from postsecondary education.
Unfortunately, loan company lobbyists are pressuring Congress to save their wasteful subsidies at the expense of students and their families.
Join Campus Progress: Tell Congress to choose students over banks, because we need a better future, and because we are fed up with banks taking billions from taxpayers for no good reason.

The DREAM Act is a bipartisan proposal that would create a pathway to citizenship for thousands of young students who were brought to the United States years ago as children.
If Congress fails to act this year, another entire class of outstanding, law-abiding high school students will graduate without being able to plan for the future, and some will be removed from their homes to countries they barely know.
This tragedy will cause America to lose a vital asset: an educated class of promising immigrant students who have demonstrated a commitment to hard work and a strong desire to be contributing members of our society.

Getting a college degree is more important than ever, but students have to assume too much debt to pay for it. Increasing federal Pell grant aid will help students rely less on federal loans to pay for college.
Both President Obama and the House proposed a massive $40 billion dollar increase in student Pell grants. Now it is up to the Senate to invest in students.
Big lenders have spent millions fighting this proposal, which cuts wasteful lender subsidies from the federal government, and uses the $87 billion in savings to make college more affordable. To ensure that the Senate prioritizes students over banks, we need to Raise Some Pell!
During the week of October 5 – 9, USSA, USPIRG and Campus Progress are asking young people to call, fax, and email their senators to demonstrate massive grassroots support for more Pell grant aid.

What the Health Congress?!:
Young People Demand Health Care Reform
Young People are not invincible, we do care about health care, and we want Congress to pass real reform now.
![]() |
Congress is taking up reform this week and the President has outlined a bold health care plan that our generation overwhelmingly supports. It will lower costs, end denial based on pre-existing conditions, give us choice and portability, and let us stay on our parent's plan until 26.
With young adults making up one third of the uninsured population, we have the most to lose from Congress’ failure to bring real reform to the health insurance system. We are being left out of employer coverage options, kicked off of our parents' insurance plans as we turn 19 or graduate college, and are being crushed by rising health care costs. We can’t afford to be silent and let opponents stand in our way.
We must show our support for President Obama's bold health care plan.
Tell Congress: Stop the partisan bickering, stop the compromises to appease health industry lobbyists, stop falling for the conservative rhetoric, and think about our future. The stability of our health, our economy, and our future hangs in the balance.

Don't Leave Young Women Out of Health Care Reform
The Senate just voted to proceed with health care reform, now is the time to ensure abortion coverage is not banned in the new health care system. Real health care reform must be good for women. But some in Congress are trying to use reform to ban insurance coverage for abortion services, services that most insurance plans already cover today. The Stupak-Pitts amendment was passed with the House legislation and could end up in the final bill…unless we make our voices heard. We can stop this restriction on women's rights from becoming law.
WHAT IS THE STUPAK PITTS AMENDMENT?
- Under the Stupak-Pitts amendment, women would not be covered for abortions in the new health insurance market even if spending their own money to purchase coverage.
- Women who opt into the more affordable public option would be banned from getting coverage for abortion services, even if their own money was used to buy insurance.
- With Stupak-Pitts, it would be much harder—and perhaps impossible—for private insurance companies to offer abortion coverage for plans in the new health insurance exchange.
This amendment has dramatic impact on young women in particular - 50% of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25 and 12.4 million women of childbearing age (15-44) are uninsured.
Reproductive services should not be left out of health care reform. Women must be able to purchase private or public health insurance that offers comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion care.

The battle to make college more affordable has come down to a critical few weeks in the Senate. The banks and student loan companies already have spent millions of dollars on lobbying, PR firms, and advertisements in their attempt to stop reform and hang on $87 billion in subsidies that could be going to help students. Now Campus Progress is taking action. We've raised money to put this :30 second spot on cable TV and on Hulu in key states across the country.

Dear Senator: Protect Reproductive Rights for Young Women
The House passed their health care bill and with it the Stupak-Pitts amendment was passed and is now threatening to end up in the final health care reform bill. We must stop this restriction on women's rights from becoming law. The Stupak-Pitts amendment bans most abortions from being covered
in the new health insurance exchange. Plans that cover abortion services will not be able to offer coverage in the exchange unless its subscribers can afford to pay 100% of their premiums with no assistance from the government. But the majority of women purchasing plans in the health insurance exchange will need government subsidies to purchase insurance, and many of these women will be young women ages 18-29. Women must be able to purchase private or public health insurance that offers comprehensive reproductivehealth care, including abortion care.
This amendment significantly impacts the youth generation: Fifty percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25 and 12.4 million women of childbearing age (15-44) are uninsured. Take Action NOW: Your Senators have the power to block an amendment like Stupak-Pitts from ending up in the final legislation. Write Your Senator Below!
The Senate is actively debating the health care reform bill, and Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska is proposing an amendment exactly like the Stupak amendment -- now is the time to ensure that reform includes abortion coverage. The Stupak-Pitts amendment aims to ban abortion coverage with reform. The amendment passed with House legislation and now could end up in the final Senate bill…unless we make our voices heard.
WHAT STUPAK-PITTS AMENDMENT DOES
- Under the Stupak-Pitts amendment, women would not be able to buy a plan in the new exchange that covers abortion, even if spending their own money to purchase coverage.

Don't Leave Young Americans Out of Health Care Reform
Congress is nearing the end of this health care battle and will soon pass a final bill to be signed into law. This is great news.
Unfortunately, the bill being finalized contains insurance plans targeted at young Americans that won't even cover most basic services. It will only cover care for catastrophes.
This plan is threatening to leave millions of people - including young people and low- and moderate-income people of all ages - without quality, comprehensive health coverage.
We still have a chance to make sure no one is left out of reform. Congress can fix the legislation and ensure that young Americans have access to basic care at affordable costs.
Contact your Members of Congress today and urge them to make these outlined changes to the legislation so that millions of young Americans aren't receiving insurance in name only.

Tell Congress: Listen to Jon Stewart
On Monday's Daily Show, Jon Stewart said it best (start the clip at 4:48 for the good stuff):
The idea of taking away the middle man in college loans would get us 46 billion dollars over 10 years- that, stunned me. That gets us more savings than removing subsidies from oil companies which I guess over 10 years is like 40 billion.
