Tell Your Rep: Strengthen & Pass the Climate Bill

On Friday, the House is voting on the American Clean Energy and Security Act (the Waxman-Markey bill, HR 2454), the first climate bill to have any chance of getting congressional approval.

Our generation - and our world - needs America to take action on the climate crisis, but the current bill falls short of the reforms we need. We must make it stronger, and now is our chance.

Write a message below to your Representative now to demand that they support strengthening amendments to the climate bill that:

Hold polluters accountable by restoring the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate coal plants

Increase investment in green jobs and in protecting vulnerable communities against the impacts of global warming

Improve the renewable energy standard to create more clean energy jobs.

Dear Representative,

I am writing to urge you to support all efforts to strengthen the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454), oppose any moves to weaken it, and vote to pass H.R. 2454 so we can make it even stronger in the Senate.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act is the greatest opportunity to guarantee a stable and prosperous future for my generation. A strong clean energy jobs bill will stimulate our economy, increase America’s competitiveness abroad and sever our ties to toxic and increasingly expensive fossil fuels. Unfortunately H.R. 2454 has been severely compromised by the problematic influence of energy companies on our legislature, tying that our future to the unlikely success of unproven and potentially dangerous technologies such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration.

Our generation doesn’t want more coal, oil, nuclear or natural gas jobs. We want clean energy to power our nation and the world without harming our bodies, our soil and our water. I urge you to join more than 48 members of the House calling on the leadership to strengthen the bill in three key ways:

1. Hold polluters accountable: restore EPA authority to regulate coal plants

2. Increase investment in green jobs and in protecting vulnerable communities against the impacts of global warming

3. Improve the renewable energy standard.
