Domestic Spying: Tell Congress to Investigate Before They Legislate
In recent weeks, the White House has been aggressively lobbying Congress not to undertake inquiries into President Bush's illegal domestic spying program.
The Senate Intelligence Committee folded under the pressure last Friday and voted along party lines to adjourn without endorsing an inquiry. Meanwhile, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee sought to limit the scope of their inquiry to the revision of existing laws without examining the details of the controversial wiretaps.
The White House is now pushing legislation that will amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to legalize the president's warrantless domestic spying program without an inquiry that would clarify the activities Congress is legalizing and why. Progressives must not sit idly by and let this happen.
Tell your members of Congress to stand up to the White House and refuse any legislation legalizing the President's domestic spying program until they have conducted a thorough inquiry.
The President broke the law and violated the public’s trust by authorizing wiretaps of American citizens without warrants required by FISA. Congress should not be a rubber stamp legitimizing his illegal actions.
